PRODUCT REVIEW
Be prepared with the AMBER Alert Child ID Kit
By James Booth

Nothing is more important to a parent than their children; I should know, I'm a dad. Much as we hate to admit it, the world isn't what it once was. Every time our kids are out of our sight, there's a danger they could be snatched.

Are you going to stick your head in the sand like the proverbial ostrich, hoping if you ignore the danger it will go away?

Or will you take the active approach and prepare for the unthinkable with the AMBER Alert Child ID Kit in Figure A?

All in one place
Because a rapid response is key in the disappearance of a child, it's essential to have all pictures and pertinent information readily accessible. For this very reason, Kingston has teamed up with AMBER Alert to create the Child ID Kit.

The AMBER Alert Child ID Kit is a USB Flash drive with the profile software pre-installed and sufficient storage space for hundreds of pictures. The Kit is about as Plug-N-Play as it gets. Plug it into a USB port, and the software will launch.

The Profiler, shown in Figure B, organizes all of the important data all in one place.

The Profiler doesn't just hold pertinent info on your child, such as height, weight, age, eye and hair color. It also has sections set up for the parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc. In Figure C is the tab for your child's medications, blood type, medical history, and allergies.

Also part of the profile is information on your child's school and teachers, their cell phone number, email address, and information pertinent to their Internet presence, shown in Figure D.

Once completed, the profile will be saved to the USB drive. It can also be exported as an RTF or CSV file though. And, as shown in Figure E, there is a place for "last seen" in the event your child does go missing.

My thoughts
"Luck favors the prepared," they say. And as unlucky as it is for a child to disappear, the luck is being able to provide investigators with the information they need as soon as possible. That is the purpose of the Child ID Kit.

It consolidates nearly every possible piece of essential data about your child into one convenient place. And it can be given to investigators to provide them with everything they need. The data can be exported, and the pictures printed for fliers. And it's all password protected.

It may sound a bit on the morbid side, but this writer recommends storing your Child ID Kit with a hair sample (plucked not cut), a cheek swab, fingerprint card and dental records, both of which can be scanned and added to the kit as images.
